The film project connecting the present to the future, Nara to the world - “NARAtive”
What is NARAtive?
NARAtive, a coinage combining "Nara" and "narrative," is designed to promote Nara to the rest of the world. The mission of NARAtive is to present outstanding films that represent the charm of Nara. It is our great pleasure to record the nature and people of Nara on film and hand them to the next generation.
“The festival is not only to screen film, it’s also for those to dream about; “Well...what if I was to make a film?”
The Nara International Film Festival invites young promising directors to make films that are set in Nara. Experienced staff and the local people support the directors concepts and ambitions whilst filming in and about Nara. Those completed NARAtive films/works travel around the world to mesmerize people with their beauty. NARAtive encourages new talents to make films and help people all over the world discover Nara.

Narative Kids.
Nara Film Festival recognizes the dreams and aspirations that children may have in the film industry, and hopes to assist and aid them in order to become tomorrow’s great directors. It is through this, that we go to the Nara city local elementary schools and hold workshops on various aspects of film making, giving the children a first hand glimpse on what exactly goes into producing, making and directing a film. In addition to that, we screen films at elementary schools hoping to inspire children to the world of film. For the 2012 Festival, we held “E.T” whereby the electricity generated was powered by bicycle driven generators, ridden by whomever wished to do so.

“Growing up I asked myself: What will I become? For what reason was I born?
I thought, I may not have been born at all. And it was from that moment, I was born into film.”

Cinematheque
With the NARative and main event currently taking place every two years, we decided to screen movies at various locations in and around Nara city to allow the people of Nara to fall in love again with the screen just as they had done with the “Obanaza” theatre, a truly iconic piece of Nara film industry history. Monthly, we screen films from foreign made documentaries to Hollywood classics and Japanese film makers/directors. It makes the perfect complimentary prelude to the main event.
